The Marin County Green Business Program is part of the Bay Area Green Business Program. Developed by Bay Area public agencies in collaboration with US EPA, Cal EPA Department of Toxic Substances Control and the business community, the Program is currently offered in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Sonoma counties. Now in its ninth year, the Program expects to certify its 600th business in 2005."
We looked into the program several years ago and realized that we already met most of the requirements. The shop had a recycling program in place that took care of our cardboard, paper, plastic, aluminum, glass and metal. Our office equipment was energy saving, and we use recycled paper in our printers. The paper from the printers that would normally be thrown away because of mistakes and miss prints is re-used as scratch paper. The light fixtures in the shop were replaced with energy saving light fixtures. Of course we recycle all our waste oil, coolant and other fluids but that is a no brainer as State and County Hazardous Waste rules require it. So it became a matter of applying for certification and then passing the inspection. We were one of the first auto repair shops in Marin to join the program and are proud to be a part of it.
